What to Wear & Pricing
Clothing

Wear what is most comfortable and looks good!

Bring a change of clothing.

Light and dark colors look the best. Pastel clothing can blend with skin, so try to stick to clothing that is either dark or light. Dark clothing tends to be slimming in general while patterns and prints draw the eye but sometimes work well on children. Clothing that is more fitted than baggy is more flattering. Sleeveless casual dresses should be avoided on women unless you are very slender. Shoulder pads are fine if very slight and well tailored to the garment. Short skirts and/or white stockings tend to stand out in a group photograph but individually can be very effective if that is the feeling of the picture. Remember legs and feet may be in the frame of the picture so please plan correctly.

The lighting in photographs will show wrinkles so please iron or steam clothes as necessary. Linen wrinkle easily and needs to be pressed, khaki needs to be pressed as well.

For girls, white shoes with white clothing create a certain look against a light background, black shoes create yet another look and to my eye appear better on a dark background.

Please advise me ahead of time so I may choose the appropriate background color.

How should twos or groups dress?

If we are photographing more than one child/person please choose no more than 3 colors of clothing for all the people in the group shot.

Displaying Your Finished Photo

Please think about where and how your finished photograph will be displayed. Will you hang it on a wall or place it on a table? Will you be using a black frame or silver or have it boxed frame or mounted?

Photos with a lighter background display better on a dark wall, darker backgrounds better on lighter walls. All photographs are printed on double weight fiber paper.

These are important questions for you to think about so you may enjoy your pictures for many years to come.

Kids

With my own children I have learned that each of them had a "good mood" time of day.

I suggest you think about your child's best time of day and book the session for as close to that time so they may really enjoy the experience of being photographed. A simple rule of thumb has been, youngest earlier in the day and middle schoolers later. Toddlers and children just learning to walk must be held. Photographing them before that age or when they are old enough to take directions make for a better photograph.

If your child has a particular toy that he or she is fond of, do bring it, unless you don't think it will be something you want to see in the photograph, instead bring a substitute toy that blends or compliments, by color, what your child is wearing. Some families have favorite chairs, rockers, shiny sleds or other significant items they consider using in the photos, we should discuss that prior to the day of your shoot.

About Make-up

If a woman is appearing in the photo and you are comfortable in make-up and wear it all the time I strongly suggest you consider a make-up artist. I can provide a make-up artist for an additional $85.00. Her work is lovely, natural looking. If you don't feel this would be comfortable for you then I would suggest that you add more base make-up than you would for normal day wear. Blend it and your blush well.

Thinly line the eyes with a soft colored pencil or add additional mascara. Dark lipstick does not look good in black & white so speak with a qualified make-up person and choose a color that is flattering, neither too bright nor dark and a lip liner that will definitely blend in and not appear harsh or exaggerated.

Grooming

Don't forget about grooming hair and nails on the children too. Gentleman, remember that a clean-shaven face is necessary, unless you specifically wear a slight growth, beard or mustache.
